About Charterhouse School

Charterhouse is a public English Independent boarding school in Godalming, Surrey, England. It was founded in 1611 by Thomas Sutton at the old Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square, Smithfield, London.

Charterhouse is a prestigious school and is regarded as one of the great nine English public schools. It is also amongst one of the most expensive schools in the UK, charging up to £40,695 fees per annum for the 2020/2021 academic years.

Is Charterhouse School good for you?

According to the Good Schools Guide, Charterhouse is ‘dynamic and crackling with expertise, energy, optimism and unashamed ambition’.

Charterhouse is academically selective and admission is very competitive. To start the admission process, the school welcomes you to visit the school on their open days. Visiting the school gives prospective parents and pupils a personal feel of the school. They also get to interact with current students and staff.

Open events available to 13+ families for the 2024/2025 session will take place on Saturday 17 September 2022.

The next event for families considering Charterhouse for 2025/2026 entry will take place in the summer of 2023.

Open events available to 16+ for 2023 entry will take place on the mornings of Saturday 18th June and Saturday 1st October.

Admissions

The entry point for admissions is at 13+ (Year 9) and 16+ (Sixth Form). Applicants will undergo five stages to be accepted; registration, writing pre-tests, interviews, checking offers, accepting the offer.

13+ candidates need to be registered by 30th September when they are in Year 6. Assessments for 2023 and 2024 are currently closed.

Registration for 16+ candidates into 2023 opens April 2022 and ends 1 October 2022.

Entrance exams and interviews

In the autumn term of Year 6, students who are planning on 13+ entry will be required to sit the ISEB Common Pre-test to Charterhouse. This assessment is a standardised series of assessments in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Successful applicants will be invited for an interview.

The interviews are informal and involve a selection of afternoon activities which were pre-designed to allow the candidates to show their capabilities. Offers will be made at the end of the Spring Term of Year 6.

Sixth Form candidates will need to provide a reference letter from their current school from 8 October 2022. Candidates who do not speak English as their first language will need to sit a UKiset prior to registration.

The assessment will take place on a Saturday, in the early part of November (Year 11). All candidates will sit tests in English, Maths and two subjects of their own choice.
