About Mill Hill

Mill Hill is a public, mixed-independent, day and boarding school in Mill Hill London. It was founded in 1807 and is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference. It was founded by a committee of non-conformists merchants, including John Rye-Smith, a congregational minister and tutor who was associated with reconciling geological sciences with the Bible and abolishing slavery.

The school’s is now fully co-educational, as of 1997. Prior to 1975 it was exclusively a boys’ school, then it allowed girls into sixth form in 1975.

Is Mill Hill School good for you?

Mill Hill School’s focus is on preparing students for their future. They encourage stimulating activities that foster good academic and personal growth.

Open Mornings and events are a great opportunity to look around the school, ask questions and meet the head. The next Open Morning holds on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Entry points for admission are for 13+, 14+, and 16+ (Sixth Form). About 170 pupils are admitted into 13+/Year 9, 10 pupils into 14+/Year 10 and around 40-50 pupils are admitted into Lower Sixth at 16+.

For 2024 entry into 13+, parents are advised to consider the Early Testing Track when their child is in Year 6. Applications for that must be completed by Friday 5th November 2022. The 6 Year track for September 2024 entry is currently closed. A chance vacancy assessment for Year 8 for entry is available to those who miss the Year 6 track.

Register your child here and pay the registration fee to start the process. Entry into 14+ is through an exam and interview. Applications should only be made when it is confirmed there is availability.

For 16+, applicants are encouraged to apply in the Autumn Term of the year prior to their desired start date. The GCSE grades required for Sixth Form at Mill Hill School are a minimum of two grade 7s and three grade 6s, with some subject-specific requirements.

Mill Hill School will send a formal request for confidential references and predicted grades from the applicant’s school. These are the criteria they rate pupils with. Only those students who appear academically suitable will be invited for an interview.

Entrance exams and interviews

Applicants who wish to enter at 13+ will sit a CEM Select Assessment. The test will comprise Verbal, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical skills. Pupils can practice with materials from here

Applicants for entry into 14+ (Year 10) will be assessed in written exams in English and Mathematics. Promising pupils will be interviewed after the exams.
