About Tonbridge Grammar School

Tonbridge School was founded in January 1905 in the Technical Institute in Avebury Avenue, Tonbridge and was formerly Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls. With the introduction of boys into Sixth Form in 2002, the name had to be changed.

The school is known for its excellent grades in both International Baccalaureate and GCSE exams.

Is Tonbridge Grammar School good for you?

Tonbridge admits girls from 11-16 and boys only into Sixth Form. Within the school campus, students and staff are encouraged to be the very best that they can be in a thriving environment.

The school welcomes parents and prospective students to their Open Events to see students, staff, and the wider community. For entry into Year 7, the Autumn Open Mornings are Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th October 2022, from 9:30am to midday. Open Evening holds Thursday 20th October 2022, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Open Afternoon is held on Monday 31th October 2022, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.

Admissions

The entry years are 7 and Sixth Form. For entry into Year 7, all prospective students must complete their Local Authority Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF).

Only 180 places are available for girls in Year 7. At the time of the test, the student must be in Year 6.

Applicants into other in-year are under probability. The school is heavily oversubscribed and usually full all year round. Get the IN YEAR ADMISSION FORM (IYAF) and send the completed form directly to the Admissions Office at the school. Applicants will be subjected to a pre-admission test to assess eligibility.

Applications for entry into Sixth Form are currently open for students studying at other schools. For Sixth Form, the Kent test is not needed. The application is done directly. Contact the school at sixthformadmissions@tgs.kent.sch.uk for more information.

For Sixth From, students must begin when they are 16 years old and they must have at least a grade 6 in their GCSE English, Maths, and at least one Science and one language. Read full requirements here.

Entrance exams and interviews

For entry into Year 7, the School can only consider applicants who have been selectively assessed according to the Kent 11+ test.

Tonbridge does not set any tests for applicants and uses the Kent Test, hosted by KCC which the applicant must register for. The Kent test comprises a test in Reasoning, then Maths and English. Each booklet contains timed tests which consist of a series of multiple-choice questions. You can get a familiarisation booklet here
