About Westminster school

Westminster was founded in 1560 and was joined to Westminster Abbey until 1868. In 1943 the school started educating boys as young as 7, and in 1973 Westminster School started to also educate girls in its Sixth Form. Roughly 70 girls join the Sixth Form each year.

The school’s alumni consist of politicians, notable musicians, poets, actors, writers, directors, sports stars and many successful entrepreneurs.

Is Westminster School good for you?

Westminster is a pinnacle for astounding academic excellence. It was ranked as number 7 in the top 10 independent schools list by the Sunday Times in 2022.  Pupils achieve exceptional examination results and entrance to some of the top universities of the world. The school engages pupils in a constructive, thoughtful process of ‘loyal dissent’ and allows them to embrace the principles of a liberal education. Pupils are also encouraged to use their skills and intelligence to help others and benefit society.

For parents who would like to tour the school, the school conducts Open Days at various points in the academic year. You can make further enquiries on available dates via an enquiry form on the website or book to attend one of these online.

The entry points for admissions are 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+. Each entry point has its own process for registration and entrance dates. Parents are advised to check the dates on the school’s website, where they can also register online.

Registration usually opens at the beginning of June and closes before the end of September for the following academic year.  For 13+, the school prefers that applications are submitted two years before entry.

Entrance exams and interviews

For 11+ and 13+ the first stage of the process is an ISEB common pre-test which is a computerised test consisting of English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The second stage is for students who passed the first stage and have a satisfactory reference. These students will sit Westminster’s own entrance exams in English and Maths in addition to an interview.

16+ assessments also have two stages. In the first stage, the students are examined in the four subjects they would prefer to study for their A levels. Successful candidates are then invited in for both general and subject specific interviews.  Candidates must also provide a recent school report, from the last 12 months.

Entrance exams and interviews usually take place in November with places being offered to students at the beginning of December for entry in the next academic year.
